I'm crazy, and I've got the papers to prove it.

When they knock you down, you not only have to get up, but you have to make it clear that you won't be knocked down a second time.

On August 2, 1907, I encountered the most threatning sight I ever saw on the ballfield.  He was only a rookie, and we licked our lips as we warmed up for the first game of a doubleheader in Washington. Evidently the manager of the Senators had picked a rube out of the cornfields of the deepest bushes to pitch against us.....He was a tall, shambling galoot of about 20 with arms so long they hung out of his sleeves and with a sidearm delivery that looked unimpressive at first glance.....One of us imitated a cow mooing and we hollered at the manager: 'get your pitchfork ready, your hayseed's on his way back to the barn'......The first time I faced him I watched him take that easy windup and then something went past me that made me flinch.  The thing just hissed with danger.  We couldn't touch him....every one of us knew we'd met the most powerful arm ever turned loose in a ball park.

There is always some kid who may be seeing me for the first or last time, I owe him my best.

I'm here to play 162. I'm scared to take a day off. The day I take off is the day I can go 5 for 5. Nobody can take me out of there. Nope. That's the way it's got to be.

Samuel Peralta "Sammy" Sosa
Chicago Cubs

The designated hitter has been the vehicle that's allowed many players nearing the end of their careers to maintain some longevity. They were not out there on a daily basis, subject to the aches and pains of playing in the field. In the National League, you have to do it the hard way. So when it comes to reaching 3,000 (hits), you can't point to anything but performance with Tony. He doesn't just bat, he plays.

(Getting hit by a pitch) is like getting a base hit. When I go down to first, it's the pitcher's loss....Nobody wants to go in and get dirty. Drop a bunt if you have to. Draw some blood if you have to. Whatever it takes to get a win, you should be out trying to do.

Larry Walker
Colorado Rockies

I don't care what the situation was, how high the stakes were -- the bases could be loaded and the pennant riding on every pitch -- it never bothered Whitey. He pitched his game. Cool. Craft. Nerves of steel.

I hated to bat against Drysdale. After he hit you he'd come around, look at the bruise on your arm and say, 'Do you want me to sign it?'

He's as good a young player as anyone I've ever seen come into the big leagues. He's tremendous. One of the very best young hitters I ever saw. He's a smart kid and he knows all about hitting. He went to Georgia Tech where he was on the Dean's List, and when I finished talking to him I felt I was on the Dean's List of hitting because he knows plenty, he really does. I asked him my usual questions about all aspects of hitting. I like to get young hitters stirred up to find out what they really know. And he knew everything! He's really a brilliant kid.
